“It will save lives”: Breton fishing nets sent to Ukraine to catch Russian drones

In the port of Roscoff, in Finistère, kilometers of fishing nets are stored and then handed over to Ukrainian forces so that they can resist attacks by Russian drones. A maneuver that awakens the pride of the inhabitants.

The support granted to Ukraine extends to the fishing ports of Brittany. In Roscoff, in Finistère, kilometers of nets are stored and then sent to kyiv, at war against Russia since 2022, to catch Vladimir Putin’s drones.

In total they have already moved 120 kilometers to the other side of Europe. And it’s far from over. “There are resources. There are dozens of kilometers to go,” Gérard Le Duff, president of the Kernic Solidarités association, explains to BFMTV.

“The maritime world is really supportive of Ukraine,” he says.

In Ukraine, these Breton nets will be used to catch small Russian drones equipped with explosives, before they crash on roads or into soldiers in trenches. These small flying objects have become real protagonists of the armed conflict between both countries.

“If the budgets fit in Ukraine, Ukrainian transports will be commissioned to come and load their nets here in Brittany. We will help them pick them up and load them,” says Christian Abaziou, logistics director at Kernic Solidarités.

Lifesaving equipment

The association started humanitarian convoys three years ago. Since then, shipments to Ukraine have not stopped, just as they did during the war.

One of the trucks present at the port is heading in particular to the south of the country, to the city of Kherson, which is often the target of attacks.

What do we know about Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine?

For Breton fishermen, this mutual aid is symbolic. “It happened by itself. There was no need to force the hand. People are proud to know that the equipment used will save lives,” says Jean-Jacques Tanguy, former president of the Finistere fisheries committee.

And the Bretons are not the only ones participating in this war. The initiative is followed by other European countries, such as Sweden and Denmark.
