Red Cross estimates that at least 1.5 million people could be affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica

According to the Red Cross, 1.5 million people could be affected by Hurricane Melissa, which is expected to be the most violent ever recorded in Jamaica. Three deaths have already been recorded in the country while preparing for the arrival of the hurricane.

Hurricane Melissa, which could be the strongest to make landfall in Jamaica and has already caused several deaths, could affect at least 1.5 million people, the Red Cross warned this Tuesday.

“But this figure is largely underestimated, because the consequences for the population will include interruptions in essential services, disruptions in markets and, of course, road blockages. This means that the entire population could suffer the consequences in one way or another,” Necephor Mghendi, head of the delegation of the International Federation of the Red Cross, told a press conference.
