At least seven deaths already recorded before the worst of the hurricane arrived
Even before making landfall on Tuesday in Jamaica, the hurricane had killed three people. Three other people were declared dead in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic, before Melissa’s arrival.
Cubans prepare for Melissa’s approach
The eye of the hurricane will directly hit eastern Cuba and local authorities have declared a “state of alert” in six provinces in the east of the country.
Since Monday, residents have been fleeing the coasts and trying to stockpile food, candles and batteries. “We buy bread, spaghetti, minced meat. This cyclone is serious, but we will overcome it,” said Graciela Lamaison, met by AFP in Santiago de Cuba, a province in the southeast of the island.
Bahamas, Bermuda… Other islands in the Caribbean Sea on alert
While eastern Cuba is expected to be the hardest hit this morning, hurricane-related bad weather is also expected on several other islands in the Caribbean Sea in the coming days.
The NHC has issued alerts for southern Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), the southeastern Bahamas but also for Bermuda and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Everyone prepares for the arrival of the hurricane.
Gusts of wind and torrential rains are expected in Cuba
In Cuba, winds of up to 215 km/h are expected, accompanied by torrential rains. Between 250 and 500 millimeters of water are expected to fall today, or up to 635 millimeters locally in mountainous terrain.
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns of the risk of “sudden and potentially catastrophic” flooding, as well as landslides.
