The Spanish police announced this Wednesday, October 29, the seizure of 20 tons of cannabis hidden in two refrigerated trucks full of peppers from Morocco. 20 individuals belonging to two networks that were dismantled were also arrested.
The cannabis had been sent in double bottoms hidden by boxes of green peppers to the Spanish port of Algeciras (south), one of the largest in Europe, before traveling by road to Spain.
“Drug trafficking and membership in a criminal organization”
The trucks, which left from Tangier, in northern Morocco, “were intercepted in Cádiz and Granada (in southern Spain), at the time when the drugs were being unloaded for distribution,” the police said in a statement.
The latter was satisfied to have “dismantled” during two operations carried out together with the General Directorate of National Security of Morocco two “criminal organizations involved in major drug trafficking.”
In total, 20 people were arrested and then placed in preventive detention “for drug trafficking and membership in a criminal organization,” Spanish police continued. Several vehicles were seized, as well as money (more than 7,000 euros) and an automatic pistol.
Spain is an important gateway for drug trafficking in Europe, due to its proximity to Morocco, one of the main cannabis producers, and its historical links with Latin America.
