American recording artist Irene Cara, known for singing the song “What a Feeling” from the movie Flashdance, and for her role as Coco Hernandez in the movie “Fame”, passed away today at the age of 63.
“This is the absolute worst part of being a cop. I can’t believe I have to write this let alone publish the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene; she will read each of the posts and she will smile She loved her fans,” her publicist, Judith Moose, wrote on Twitter, without specifying the cause of death.
The family asked for privacy as funeral services unfold for the artist, “whose legacy will live on forever through her music and her films,” added the publicist, quoted by the Spanish news agency Efe.
Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1959, Cara worked in television and theater before landing the lead role in the 1976 musical drama ‘Sparkle’.
However, international fame came only with her participation in the film “Fame” (in which she performed the theme song), for which she won the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes.
Her song “Flashdance” also earned her an Academy Award for Best Original Song and two Grammy Awards for Best Original Film Soundtrack Album, a Television Special Award, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
