The Ukrainian government on Friday announced a ban on the export of firewood, on the assumption that it could be a fundamental material to guarantee heating in a winter that will basically be characterized by problems with the electricity supply.
Kiev had already banned coal exports in September and has now done the same with firewood.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal explained that in some areas, especially those close to the battle front, firewood is already the main source of heating, according to the UNIAN news agency.
Russian attacks on Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure have led to power cuts, including in Kiev, where heating was restored in only a third of homes as of Friday morning.
The mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko, told the Telegram messaging service that 400 heating points have been installed in the city to ensure the well-being of the population.
These stations also make it possible to charge electronic devices, such as mobile phones.
