Early voting begins in the US for the runoff in Georgia

Early in-person voting to decide the final US Senate seat is already underway across the state of Georgia, with Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock working to defeat Republican candidate Herschel Walker.

Georgia was forced to go back to the race to nominate a senator for Congress, after neither candidate reached the 50% mark in the November 8 midterm elections.

The incumbent senator, the Democratic Reverend Raphael Warnock, will again face former soccer star Herschel Walker, backed by Donald Trump, this time in a vote without a third candidate.

Warnock spent the weekend urging his supporters not to wait until December 6, the day of the runoff election, to vote.

Seeking to build on his role as pastor to Martin Luther King Jr. and Georgia’s first black senator, Warnock focused his efforts Sunday among black communities in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Walker, on the other hand, held no public events over the weekend and made no reference to early voting at his campaign events, even as the GOP attempts to boost voter turnout after Walker underperformed other Republicans in Georgia in the midterms.

Walker finished the first round about 200,000 fewer votes than Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who easily won a second term.

With a controversial profile, Walker, a Trump protégé, is a former football player who has campaigned against abortion, despite two women accusing him of financing their abortions.

In-person early voting in the state continues through Friday.

Control of the Senate does not depend on this election, as Democrats have already secured a majority through the 50 seats they won in the midterms, adding to Vice President Kamala Harris’ runoff vote.

By Sunday’s close, nearly 200,000 votes had already been cast in some counties in the region that chose to vote over the weekend.
