More than 12 million tons of grain have been exported since August 1, when the agreement with Kiev and Moscow that put the blockade of Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea came into effect, Turkey announced today.
According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, the agreement reached through the mediation of the United Nations and the Ankara government has allowed the departure of a total of 501 ships with grain on board.
“The number of ships departing from Ukrainian ports reached 501 on Monday. The volume of grain (wheat, corn and barley) shipped exceeded 12 million tons,” the defense ministry said in a statement.
The agreement, whose main purpose was to alleviate the food crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, will remain in force until March 2023, following talks between the parties on November 17.
