British banknotes bearing the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II “will remain legal tender.” This is the clarification that the Bank of England wanted to make in a press release published this Thursday to pay tribute to the sovereign.
The institution specified that “an announcement will be made on the current notes of the Bank of England once the period of mourning has been observed.” The object of the announcement could be the future substitution of the queen’s face for that of the heir to the crown, her son, who will reign under the name of Carlos III.
The Bank of England has highlighted Queen Elizabeth II as the first monarch to appear on its banknotes. “The staff of the Bank of England wish to express their deepest condolences to the Royal Family,” the institution wrote.
The Queen of England, Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 96. Her reign will have marked history and will last more than 70 years. She died Thursday afternoon in Balmoral, Scotland, where she was on a few days off.
