Ukraine will receive a French long-range missile system

Ukraine announced on Tuesday that it has received from France a system for launching multiple missiles, which will be added to the arsenal of long-range artillery used in the war against Russian forces.

“The French LRU has arrived in Ukraine! The Ukrainian army is now even more powerful,” Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov wrote on Twitter.

The French-supplied LRU is the fourth Advanced Missile Launching System (MLRS) to be delivered to Ukraine after HIMARS, M270 and MARS II to help Kyiv repel the Russian invasion.

The system has a range of about 70 kilometers.

In recent months, Ukraine has used systems supplied by the West to attack command posts and ammunition depots deeper in Russian-controlled territory than its own arsenal would allow.

Kiev is asking for more long-range weapons to advance on the battlefield and air defense systems to stave off waves of Russian attacks.

Two weeks ago, French Army Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the delivery of two French LRUs to Ukraine in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche.

Lecornu said France would also send two batteries of Crotale air defense systems and is “examining a request from Ukraine for radars critical to detecting upstream attacks”.

France still plans to train 2,000 of the 15,000 soldiers the EU has promised to train.
