Elizabeth II died. Cavaco Silva highlights reign “unique in transformations”

The former president of the Republic Aníbal Cavaco Silva highlights that the reign of Elizabeth II, which ended this Thursday, was “unique in social, economic and political transformations in Europe and in the world.”

In a statement sent to TSFThe former head of state points out that it is time to reflect on the “deep sense of service that marked the life” of Elizabeth II, stressing that the monarch revealed “remarkable wisdom.”

“The sense of duty and service of a sovereign who, until the last day of her life, performed her functions with extraordinary dignity, to the point that her last official act was the exercise of her most important power, that of inviting a new Prime Minister Minister to form a government,” he stresses.

Cavaco Silva spoke twice with Elizabeth II, the first in 1986, at the 600th anniversary celebrations of the Windsor Treaty, and the second in 2012, when he represented Portugal at the opening of the London Olympics.

“Meanwhile, I had the opportunity to exchange impressions with her at different official dinners on the occasion of European summits, of which I have pleasant memories,” he says.

Closing the message, Aníbal Cavaco Silva says that he pays tribute to the queen at a “historic and very sad moment” and that this was an “example of dedication and service that should guide all those who exercise public functions.”
