US Supreme Court to review legality of Biden’s plan on student debt

The US Supreme Court announced Thursday that it will review the legality of US President Joe Biden’s plan to forgive student debt, which covers millions of people.

The country’s highest judicial body has indicated it will review the case quickly, with oral statements scheduled for February.

In deliberation, the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of the program until the resolution of the case. The White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, celebrated in a statement the Supreme Court’s decision to accept the case and recalled that this program is necessary to help the approximately 40 million people who can access the plan.

Karine Jean-Pierre insisted it was legal and backed by government lawyers after “careful analysis”. On November 22, the Biden administration announced a moratorium on student debt payments beyond June, after repeated calls for the plan to be temporarily put on hold.

The resolution of the court of the Eighth District of Appeals, based in Saint Louis, (Missouri) adds to a series of judicial resolutions of the White House administration on this program to cancel up to 20,000 dollars (19,100 euros) per person of student debt

At the end of August, Biden announced that he would forgive part of the debt that millions of university students contracted with the federal administration to be able to pay for their studies, in a gesture aimed at the youth vote in the November 8 midterm elections.

Biden announced the forgiveness of up to $20,000 of student debt, although the measure only plans to benefit those who earn less than $125,000 per year (119,000 euros) or who, while married, have an income of less than $250,000 (238,000 euros) per year.
