5.7 magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesian island of Java

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java on Saturday, where another quake killed more than 330 people two weeks ago, with no reports of casualties so far, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the USGS (United States Geological Survey), the epicenter of the earthquake occurred 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Banjar, in West Java, at a depth of 112.5 kilometers.

The Indonesian meteorological agency, for its part, assessed the magnitude of this earthquake at 6.4, which shook buildings in the capital, Jakarta.

So far there are no reports of casualties or considerable damage. On November 21, a shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquake near the city of Cianjur, also in West Java, killed at least 331 people. The earthquake destroyed many buildings and triggered several landslides.

Situated on the Pacific ‘ring of fire’, where tectonic plates meet, Indonesia is regularly the scene of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
