The Ukrainian troops will have reached the eastern bank of the Dnieper River, near Kherson, a city recently liberated from Russian occupation, indicate military reports cited by the Spanish news agency Efe.
New military reports show footage of a small group of soldiers crossing the waters in boats and arriving at a small port on the east bank of the Dnieper River, where they raised the Ukrainian flag.
According to the American Institute for the Study of Warfare, if this breakthrough is confirmed, Ukrainian troops could start operating on the east bank.
However, the same institute stresses that it is not clear that the Russian troops have withdrawn from that shore. A Ukrainian military source, quoted by the Ukrinform agency, assures that the port from where the flag was raised will serve as the starting point for the recovery of the east bank of the Dnieper.
The director of the National Secret Services, Avril Haines, affirmed this Sunday that the fighting in Ukraine is progressing more slowly, at a height that proves that both sides will take advantage of the moment to readjust and resupply for a possible counteroffensive from Kiev in the spring.
“But we have a lot of skepticism about whether the Russians are ready for this or not,” Avril Haines said on Saturday, noting that she is more optimistic about the Ukrainian side in the coming months.
The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people -more than six million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data. of the UN, which catalogs this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).
