“The deeper you dig, the longer you live.” Behind the image of a modern conflict based on drones and missiles, the war in Ukraine resembles, in the east of the country, the combats of the 20th century. On the front line, the trenches still stand out like the sinews of war.
In the Donbass they have become essential “to move between positions. It is important not to run in the open field”, explains a Ukrainian soldier member of an assault brigade.
difficult living conditions
Hidden by openings and crannies of the ground, he and his companions watched and defended forward positions. The Russian army is only 800 meters away.
“They are pointing machine guns at us,” continues the soldier.
Winter has already fallen in eastern Ukraine and here the thermometer regularly shows temperatures around -10°C. For a month now, the men have been living 24 hours a day in makeshift underground camps.
“Without places like that, we could never survive. It would have been too difficult to live in the trenches in the cold without heating, in the rain and snow,” Pashtet, a soldier from the 79th assault battalion, tells BFMTV’s microphone. .
In front of our cameras, some fighters, like Katcha, do not hesitate to show off their warlike actions. “The troops got off the trucks. As soon as I got out, I fired into the crowd. I think I killed at least 20 people… for sure,” he says.
For the most part, these experienced men have been fighting in the Donbass since the beginning of the war. And I do not intend to stop before the Russian army is pushed beyond the borders.
