World Cup: the King of Morocco in the street to congratulate the Atlas Lions after their classification

King Mohammed VI, dressed in the red jersey with the green star and the national flag, was seen aboard a white sedan driving through the crowd in Rabat, shortly after Morocco’s victory over Spain.

Everyone is partying in the streets of Morocco this Tuesday. After the Atlas Lions qualified for the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup, a historic performance, thousands of people celebrated the victory against Spain. Including the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, according to images collected by Al Jazeera journalist Nacir Abdessamad and the Moroccan newspaper The morning.

The sovereign can be seen at the front of a car, waving to the crowd or waving a small Moroccan flag. All supervised by several security guards.

“Historic Service”

Mohammed VI also congratulated the players for their “historic performance”, the newspaper reports. He spoke by phone with the president of the Moroccan soccer federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, and the coach of the national team, Walid Regragui.

Throughout the country, Moroccans erupted with joy. And for good reason: their national team is the last African or Arab team still standing in Qatar.

For millions of people it is a dream come true after so many years of waiting and frustration. The Atlas Lions have never gone this far in the world tournament. Before 2022, his best result in the highest soccer competition was in 1986, when he reached the round of 16.

If they win against Portugal on Sunday, Morocco would become the first African team in history to qualify for the semifinals of a World Cup. In 2010, Ghana failed in the quarterfinals against Uruguay.
