Ukrainian embassies in Romania and Denmark received threatening packages or letters this Tuesday, triggering 21 cases of these types of money transfers to European countries supporting Kiev, the Ukrainian government revealed.
“We have new cases of dangerous shipments to our embassies,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in statements quoted by the Ukrinfrom portal.
The aim is to “terrify our representatives,” the minister continued, leaving those responsible for such acts the message that “stop wasting time and money” because “they won’t achieve anything.”
So far, threatening letters – with pyrotechnic material or with animal eyes in them and traces of blood – have been confirmed in Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, Italy and the Czech Republic.
In Spain, envelopes with these characteristics have been intercepted in recent days at the Embassy in Madrid, as well as at the consulates in Malaga and Barcelona.
Before that, booby-trapped letters had already been sent, the first of which was sent to the Moncloa Palace (seat of the Spanish government) on November 24 and addressed to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
Captured letters were also sent to the Spanish Ministry of Defence, the Satellite Center at Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base (Madrid) and the Instalaza arms company in Zaragoza.
Only one of these packages caused a minor injury, when a Ukrainian embassy employee opened the envelope and suffered a hand injury.
Spain’s interior minister on Friday recommended that the European Commission and partner countries take action if they receive booby-trapped letters, similar to those sent to various entities in Spain, admitting they may be linked to the war in Spain. Ukraine.
On Monday, the Ukrainian embassy in Lisbon called the police because of “suspicious correspondence”, but authorities found no explosives.
