According to the New York Times, Jill Biden told Emmanuel Macron that her husband wants to run again in 2024.

Joe Biden is due to announce soon if he wants to run for a second term as President of the United States. According to the New York Times, his wife told Emmanuel Macron that she intends to do it.

Joe Biden wants to be re-elected President of the United States. This was stated in any case by his wife, Jill Biden, to Emmanuel Macron, during his state visit to Washington last week, two people “who were aware of the discussion” said at the New York Times.

The American media reports that the scene took place during the state dinner held at the White House last Thursday. The US and French presidents and their wives shared a table with others, including US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Jill Biden then strikes up a conversation about how “fitness helps clear her head, especially when she’s campaigning,” according to the New York Times.

Emmanuel Macron would then have asked her if she was ready for a new campaign. “Absolutely,” Jill Biden responded, according to newspaper sources. The French president would then have proposed a toast to Joe Biden.

A decision expected soon

The latter must announce soon if he wants to run in the 2024 presidential elections, while former President Donald Trump has already declared his candidacy.

His chief of staff, Ron Klain, told the Wall Street Journal that he expected the president to decide “shortly after the holidays” and “that his decision would be to go.”

For his political environment, it seems in fact an open secret. Back in October, Biden said in an interview with MSNBC that he “had not yet made a formal decision” to run again, but that he “intended” to run for a second term.

“I hope he runs,” Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader since January in the House of Representatives, told Fox News on Sunday.

“From everything I’ve heard from him, publicly and privately, he intends to run again,” Senator Chris Coons, a longtime friend of Joe Biden’s, told AFP.

The question of his state of health remains. Currently 80 years old, Joe Biden would turn 86 at the end of a hypothetical second term, while some already consider him too old to fulfill his role. However, in November 2021, the White House doctor concluded that he was “fit” to exercise the responsibilities of a president, in his health report made public.
