Portugal: at least one dead after floods near Lisbon

Authorities closed roads and tunnels in the country’s capital due to flooding and urged people to stay at home.

Heavy rain lashed Lisbon, causing flooding and killing at least one person, prompting local authorities to put Portugal’s capital on alert Wednesday night.

The National Institute of Meteorology (IPMA) has placed a “red” alert in Lisbon, the neighboring district of Santarem as well as the Algarve region (in the south of Portugal) due to heavy rains and strong winds, which indicates that expect these conditions to persist. until Friday.

Parts of the capital’s airport were flooded, images were shown on social media and two flights were diverted.

The victim is a 55-year-old woman.

A spokeswoman said the airport was already “operational”. Civil Protection Commander Andre Fernandes told a news conference that a 55-year-old woman had died in a basement apartment in the town of Algés, near Lisbon. Her husband was rescued and is safe and sound.

“We call on people not to go out during these heavy rains,” he said, adding that people living in flood-prone areas should “find shelter” in safe places.

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas visited the flooded areas and said the necessary works to build a drainage channel are expected to start soon.

“These changes (due to global warming) are terrible,” said Carlos Moedas. “We have to be ready.”
