The US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a law protecting same-sex marriage throughout the United States, fearing the Supreme Court would overturn the matter.
The text, which was approved by the Senate last week, must now be signed into law by President Biden. He promised to do it without delay.
Gay and lesbian unions have been guaranteed by the United States Supreme Court since 2015. But after the high court’s landmark overturning of abortion last June, many progressives fear that this right too will be undone.
The temple of law already seems ready to authorize certain American companies to refuse to serve same-sex couples, in the name of free speech. It could be decided in this direction already this summer.
The Republican Party divided on the issue.
A large majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, even in Republican ranks. But the religious right remains largely opposed.
Specifically, the law approved Tuesday in the US Congress repeals previous legislation that defined marriage as the union between a man and a woman. And it prohibits civil registrars, regardless of the state in which they work, discriminating against couples “based on their sex, race, ethnicity or origin.”
He was voted for by all elected Democrats and 39 Republicans. 169 members of the “Grand Old Party” opposed it.
