A Moscow court found his opponent Ilia Yachin guilty on Friday of spreading “false information” about the Russian army, following criticism of the military offensive in Ukraine, AFP reported.
The court found Ilia Yashin guilty of committing the “crime” of spreading false information about the Russian military, the court president said.
The opponent’s sentence was to be announced at the end of the verdict, which sometimes takes several hours. The prosecutor had asked for nine years in prison.
Arrested after denouncing “murder of civilians”
Ilia Iachine, 39, arrested in June, was being tried for having denounced during a live intervention on YouTube “the murder of civilians” in the Ukrainian town of Boutcha, near Kiev, where the Russian army was accused of abuses, which Moscow denies.
His arrest did not stop him from continuing to scathingly criticize the authorities and denounce military intervention in Ukraine.
Following the launch of the military operation in Ukraine, the Russian authorities strengthened their legislative arsenal to silence critical voices.
Several people have already been sentenced to several years in prison after being convicted of publishing “false information” or “discrediting” the military.
