European Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili was arrested in Brussels by Belgian police after searching 16 houses, advances the newspaper Le Soir🇧🇷
Belgian police say the raids this afternoon focused on suspicions of criminal organisation, corruption and money laundering, targeting mainly parliamentary assistants and members of the European Parliament.
Recently, Kaili affirmed that Qatar -where the soccer World Cup is held- is a “pioneering country in workers’ rights”, after a meeting with the Minister of Labor of that country.
The police explain that the investigation in question takes several months and that there are suspicions that a Gulf country, Qatar, may be “influencing the economic and political decisions of the European Parliament.”
Luca Visentini, general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation, was also arrested.
The Belgian press also reported the arrest of a former MEP from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), Italian Pier-Antonio Panzeri, as well as Kaili’s current partner, a 44-year-old S&D employee, who was Panzeri MP. attendee.
PASOK expels Kaili
The Greek party PASOK, to which Eva Kaili belongs, expelled the MEP “following the latest developments in the investigation by the Belgian authorities into the corruption of European parliamentarians.”
“Eva Kaili was expelled from the party by decision of the president Nikos Androulakis”, writes the Greek newspaper Ekathimerini🇧🇷
