The US government will send its first high-level delegation to China since a promise made in Bali last month by Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Joe Biden to warm up their relations.
Under Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Daniel Kritenbrink will accompany National Security Council Senior Director for China and Taiwan Laura Rosenberger from December 11 to 14, the Department of Homeland Security announced. They will visit China, South Korea and Japan.
In China, Daniel Kritenbrink will be in charge of taking over from Joe Biden after the latter’s meeting with Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali in mid-November.
“Explore potential areas of cooperation”
The two leaders then vowed to “continue to responsibly manage the competition between our two countries and explore potential areas of cooperation,” the State Department said.
Joe Biden and Xi Jinping had spoken in particular about recent controversial issues, such as the future of Taiwan, US restrictions on imports of Chinese technology products or even China’s influence maneuvers around the world.
Daniel Kritenbrink will also prepare the visit of the head of diplomacy Anthony Blinken scheduled for early 2023, the first by a prominent US diplomat to China in four years.
