President of Peru wants to advance general elections to April 2024

The President of Peru announced this Monday that she will propose the anticipation of the general elections to April 2024, in response to the claim made in the street protests, in the last two days, throughout the country.

“I decided to take the initiative to reach an agreement with Congress to advance the general elections to April 2024. In the next few days I will send Congress a bill to advance the elections,” said Dina Boluarte, in a speech.

Dina Boluarte took office this Wednesday to replace her predecessor Pedro Castillo, dismissed by Congress, after having ordered the dissolution of Parliament, announced the formation of an emergency executive, to govern by decree, and summoned a constituent assembly and the reorganization of Justice. .

In this sense, the new President of Peru said that she made the decision to advance the elections and not finish her term in July 2026, as planned, interpreting “in the widest possible way the will of the citizens and, consequently, with the responsibility that the exercise of the Government implies.

Boluarte clarified that the approval of this law implies constitutional reforms “that must be approved for a more expeditious process.”

“In the time until the date of the first general elections, my Government will also promote the agreement in the Congress of the Republic of a law to reform the political system that allows (…) a more efficient, transparent and democratic system of participatory government,” he said.

With this reform, Boluarte said that he hopes that “all corrupt practices will be eliminated and that political parties will be legitimized by citizen participation.”

“I call on all the political forces in the country, in the regions and provinces, the authorities, civil society and the Peruvian people to participate in this process, so that a wave of democratic will and national responsibility guide us and East, to launch the legal, institutional and democratic bases of a united, free and socially just Peru”, he concluded.

In the same speech, the head of state also announced that she had declared a state of emergency “in areas of high social conflict”, where the demonstrations demanding the resignation of Boluarte and the holding of early elections were more intense and during which they died two women. .

“I announce the declaration of a state of emergency in areas of high social conflict (…). I gave instructions to peacefully regain control of internal order without affecting the fundamental rights of citizens, ”he said, without specifying the areas.

Two young people died on Sunday in Andahuaylas, in the south of the country, while participating in demonstrations demanding early elections and the resignation of Boluarte.
