Suspicions of corruption in the European Parliament: Viktor Orban is amused by the setbacks of the institution

The Hungarian Prime Minister ironically welcomed the revelations about possible acts of corruption related to Qatar in the European Parliament.

The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, rubbed his hands this Monday over the corruption scandal that hits the European Parliament, always quick to denounce violations of the rule of law in this Central European country.

“Hello to the European Parliament!” He launched in a mocking tone on his Twitter account.

“And there they said they were deeply concerned about corruption in Hungary,” he joked, in a message accompanied by a 1981 photo of former US presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush laughing.

Hungary threatened to freeze funds

This shovel of the nationalist leader occurs when Hungary is under threat of freezing several billion euros in funds from the European Union (EU), due to reforms considered insufficient against corruption. Parliament is at the forefront of this matter and regularly calls on the Commission to be firm.

In this context, Brussels maintained on Friday its recommendation of a blockade of 7,500 million. It is up to the Member States to decide before December 19 to validate this proposal, reject it or modify the amount.

The European executive, which a few weeks ago still seemed in favor of a conciliatory approach towards Hungary, bowing under the “enormous political pressure” of the Strasbourg Parliament, had recently judged Budapest, which was therefore delighted by the news of the weekend.

The Vice President of the European Parliament commissioned

The vice president of the institution, the Greek socialist Eva Kaili, was accused this Sunday of “corruption” and imprisoned in Brussels, in the investigation of a Belgian judge regarding the large payments that Qatar would have made to influence decisions.

“In short, the Progressive Alliance group has been fabricating lies about corruption in Hungary for years, and now its front man… is embroiled in the biggest scandal in Hungarian history. EU,” said Balazs Hidveghi, an MEP from the party of Orban, on Twitter. “A fine example of hypocrisy,” he chided.
