A friend of Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, was killed on Sunday along with two other women in Rome after a man shot himself during a condominium meeting attended by about 30 people. The meeting took place in a cafe.
The 57-year-old alleged killer, identified as Claudio Campoi, stole the murder weapon, a Glock pistol, from a firing range. According to the newspaper Corriere della Serahad 170 bullets in his possession, his passport and six thousand euros in cash, and was planning to flee abroad.
The suspect arrested by the police had difficult relations with the administrators of the consortium responsible for managing the building in the Fidene district, northeast of Rome. He accused them of trying to evict him from his apartment, according to a text published on his blog in early November.
In addition to the three fatalities aged 50, 55 and 71, four more were injured. According to witnesses cited by the Corriere della Sera, the man reportedly shouted “I’m going to kill you all”, but the gun reportedly jammed. Some of those present disarmed him and threw him to the ground.
Meloni revealed on Sunday evening that one of her friends was one of the victims. Nicoletta Golisano, 50, was the mother of a 10-year-old boy and attended the meeting as an accountant.
“Nicoletta was a protective mother, a sincere and discreet friend, a strong and vulnerable woman at the same time,” the Prime Minister, leader of the Brothers of Italy, said on Facebook, where she posted a photo of the two at a celebration.
The killer “has been arrested and I hope that justice will be served soon. But the word justice is not useful to talk about what happened, as it is never fair to die this way,” Meloni added.
