Two Portuguese among those killed in explosion on the island of Jersey

Two Portuguese are among the fatalities of the explosion and collapse of a residential building on the island of Jersey, belonging to the British crown, which occurred on Saturday, a Portuguese government source said Monday, which is supporting the families of the victims. .

“Following the explosion in Jersey, the death of two Portuguese people is confirmed, which the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deeply regrets,” a source from the ministry led by João Gomes Cravinho said in a message sent to Lusa.

According to the same source, “monitoring of the situation and support for the families of the victims is carried out through the General Consulate of Portugal in London and the Honorary Consulate in Jersey.”

The latest assessment of the explosion and collapse of a residential building in the town of Sanint Helier, Jersey Island, this Sunday, indicated that the accident caused five deaths.

After two days of searching, authorities admitted there were no survivors, although four people were still missing.

A gas leak is the alleged cause of the accident, which occurred on Saturday at 04:00 local time (05:00 in Lisbon), in the capital of the island. CCTV footage showed a fireball engulfing the three-story beachfront building, followed by a thick column of smoke.
