The First Lady of Ukraine, a guest on BFMTV this Monday night, still remembers the night of February 23-24 when Russia’s invasion of Ukrainian territory began.
“The first thing I heard was strange noises that sounded like explosions. The first thing I thought was that maybe it was fireworks,” said Olena Zelenska, the wife of Volodymyr Zelensky.
She first developed a form of denial, before quickly getting caught up in reality.
The end of a vision of life.
“We don’t want to believe it started, but the understanding comes very quickly, he continued on our antenna, you understand that your whole life as you imagined it has come to an end.” Then he gave an important detail for the population: “Today we did not hear sirens. The population’s information system worked much later.”
Olena Zelenska then remembered the first minutes of the conflict and not seeing her husband by her side. She eventually found him in an adjoining room, putting on a suit for the last time and a shirt to go to work. “She only told me one thing: ‘it started’. And everything became clear,” she testified. Since then, Volodymyr Zelensky has only appeared in a khaki outfit.
For his part, the possibility of leaving his country was never raised. “He had no desire to leave or run,” she said.
