The European Parliament dismisses the vice-presidency of the Greek MEP suspected of corruption

The European Parliament (EP) dismissed Vice President Eva Kaili from her post on Tuesday, who was arrested by the Belgian police for her alleged involvement in a corruption scandal.

The decision that the Greek socialist MEP cannot hold her post was approved by 625 votes in favour, one against and two abstentions, which means a double majority of two thirds of the votes cast and a majority of the deputies that make up the hemicycle.

The vote took place under Article 21 of the EP regulation, following investigations that the Belgian authorities are carrying out in the context of suspicions of corruption involving the Greek MEP, among other suspects.

The procedure was started by a decision of the Conference of Presidents (President of the EP and leaders of the political groups) early in the morning, which adopted the decision unanimously.
