Strikes in Ukraine: Russia claims to have prevented a foreign arms delivery

Ukraine was hit by massive strikes on Friday, leading to power and water cuts across the country. Russia said on Saturday that it had bombed sites to prevent the delivery of foreign weapons.

The Russian military said on Saturday that it had prevented the delivery of foreign weapons to Ukrainian forces, after massive attacks were carried out in Ukraine the previous day that caused power cuts across the country.

“On Friday, December 16, a massive attack with high-precision weapons was carried out against Ukraine’s military command systems, military-industrial complex and energy sites,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“The objective has been achieved. All the designated sites have been attacked,” according to the same source.

“As a result of the strike, the delivery of foreign-made weapons and ammunition was prevented, the advance of reserves (of Ukrainian forces) to the combat zones was blocked, the operation of manufacturing and repair of weapons was suspended (. ..),” the statement read.

Ukraine announced on Friday that it had suffered fresh Russian missile attacks that cut water in the capital, Kyiv, and cut electricity across the country, plunged into freezing cold.

These attacks have been denounced as “war crimes” by the European Union.
