A highly symbolic construction. As the Christmas season approaches and the conflict between kyiv and Moscow continues, Ukrainians have embarked on building a Christmas “invincibility tree” in Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, according to a snapshot released Thursday by the Independent News Agency of Ukraine on Telegram.
The mountain is impressive. Ukrainian volunteers collected and stacked camouflage nets in Mykolaiv, a southern port city, on top of a monument, covered with sandbags since the start of the conflict.
Garlands and toys have been added. The set, in green, recalls the typical Christmas trees of this time of year and symbolizes the resilience of Ukrainians, while the war against Russia continues. “It’s wonderful,” enthuses a girl, a Mykolaiv resident, to the BBC.
Locals want to believe in a Christmas ‘miracle’
This unusual construction has been nicknamed the “tree of invincibility” by locals who hope, almost 10 months after the start of the Russian invasion, that the conflict will end soon.
“It is very symbolic to put up a Christmas tree at this time to antagonize our enemy,” said another Ukrainian resident.
“There is no (Christmas) spirit,” said another resident who still hopes to see her country win against the Russians. “I want to believe that this miracle can happen. We want to celebrate, not only Christmas and the New Year, but also the victory, ”she says.
Camouflage nets are to be sent to Ukrainian soldiers after the Christmas season.
