Peruvian president fires prime minister and announces cabinet restructuring

The Peruvian president announced this Sunday the resignation of the prime minister, Pedro Angulo, after the political crisis that is shaking the country and that has caused the death of more than two dozen citizens in the protests.

The change came ten days after Angulo was sworn in as prime minister and is part of a ministerial restructuring that will take place between today and Tuesday.

Dina Boluarte indicated that she is looking for a person who has knowledge of the technical part of the position, but who is “a little more political to be able to face “social discontent” and build bridges for dialogue,” reported the RPP. station, quoted by the news agency Europa.Prensa.

The Peruvian head of state said that dialogue must be a priority in the context of the political crisis: “this government must have the doors open for dialogue in the ministries with the new leaders, as well as with Congress.”

Peru has been experiencing an institutional and social crisis since Congress deposed President Pedro Castillo on December 7, after he announced the dissolution of Parliament and the creation of an emergency executive, which would govern by decree, a measure interpreted by the majority as an attempted coup. Condition.

The formation of the new executive by the former vice president, Dina Boluarte, generated protests among the population.

On Saturday, Boluarte ruled out resigning from office and demanded that Congress reconsider the “early electoral vote”, after the rejection, the day before, of the executive’s project to call elections in December 2023, when the protests that persist in the country provoked at least minus 23 deaths.

In office for 11 days since he replaced Castillo, Boluarte announced the reorganization of the cabinet of ministers, to better face the crisis, after the resignation of two members of the government team.

One faction of the demonstrators is protesting against Castillo’s resignation and demanding early elections and the closure of congress, while others are calling for Boluarte’s resignation and the release of Castillo, who has been detained on charges of rebellion since he tried to dissolve congress, thereby which was in conflict last week.

The government of Lima decreed this Sunday a mandatory nighttime curfew for five days in the province of Huamanga, in the Ayacucho region, after last week’s protests left nine dead, following clashes between protesters and security forces.

In this way, Huamanga joins the mandatory night curfew measure that the government ordered this Thursday for 15 more provinces in eight of the 24 departments that the country has.

On Wednesday, the government declared a 30-day state of national emergency to try to control acts of vandalism and violence committed at demonstrations.

During the state of emergency, the constitutional rights related to the inviolability of the home, freedom of movement within the country, freedom of assembly and freedom of personal security are suspended.

Official figures show that, so far, 23 people have died in different areas of the country, informing the Ministry of Health that 77 injured remain hospitalized.
