Amber Heard-Johnny Depp trial: actress waives appeal

The American actress, who recently appealed the conviction against her ex-husband, finally announces that she is abandoning her legal proceedings.

Amber Heard announces the end of her legal battle against Johnny Depp on Monday. In a long press release published on Instagram, the American actress explains that she is waiving to appeal her conviction for defamation, as she had formalized at the beginning of the month. She also reveals that she made a deal with the other party.

“Even if my appeal to the American court is successful, the best outcome would be a new trial, during which a new jury would have to weigh the evidence. I simply cannot go through this a third time.”

The Aquaman actress and the Pirates of the Caribbean actor, who were married from 2015 to 2017, fell out during a high-profile trial last spring in a Fairfax, Virginia courthouse.

Johnny Depp’s complaint, at the origin of this defamation lawsuit, related to the publication of a column published in 2018 in the Washington Post in which Amber Heard claimed to have been a victim of domestic violence, without however citing her ex-husband.

Amber Heard had responded with another defamation complaint, in relation to comments by Johnny Depp’s lawyer, who described the actress’s statements as false. After six weeks of a show trial, during which each accused the other of domestic violence, Johnny Depp was ordered to pay $10.35 million, against $2 million for the Sleepy Hollow actor.

In early December, Amber Heard had announced that she would appeal this court decision. Which she resigns on Monday. A “very difficult decision”, as she explains in her press release:

“I no longer trust the American justice system, which failed to protect my testimony. It served as entertainment and fuel for social media.”

Because before the judicial decision, Johnny Depp had already won the battle of opinion. Throughout the trial, Amber Heard was the target of repeated attacks on all social networks. “The slander I have been a victim of is an amplified version of what women go through when they denounce,” she laments today. A “humiliation” that she “simply can’t submit to again.”

The actress, who does not specify the nature of the accepted agreement, insists that her version has not changed at all:

“I finally have a chance to emancipate myself from what I tried to let go of six years ago, on terms that suit me. I have admitted nothing. This is not an act of concession. I have accepted no restrictions on what I can say.” , no jokes”.
