A landslide at a camp in Malaysia has killed at least 23 people, including six children, local authorities announced Saturday as rescue efforts continue.
In the town of Batang Kali, on the outskirts of the capital Kuala Lumpur, a few dozen people are still missing.
Selangor State Fire and Rescue Director Norazam Khamis said the chances of finding survivors in the mud and rubble the day after the tragedy were “very slim”.
Authorities said more than 90 people in that camp were on the property without permits when the landslide occurred in the early hours of Friday.
At least 61 people were rescued alive or found safe.
This type of phenomenon is common in Malaysia after the heavy rains, which usually occur at the end of the year. However, there was no heavy rain in the area on the night of the disaster.
