Ukraine: Lukashenko says Russia and Belarus agree to dialogue with Europe

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko received his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Minsk this Monday and assured that the two countries are ready for dialogue with Europe, to whom he appealed to “listen to the voice of reason”.

“Vladimir [Putin] and I decided, of course, that Russia and Belarus are open to dialogue with other states, including European ones. I hope that they will soon listen to the voice of reason and that we can engage in a constructive dialogue, both on common security and on the future world order.”said Lukashenko after the meeting with Putin, according to the official Belarusian news agency Belta.

Lukashenko emphasized that “defending democracy and progress through the use of restrictions and military force no longer impresses its own voters who now know all the consequences and shortcomings of that behavior”🇧🇷

“The strengthening of relations between Belarus and Russia is a response to the changing world situation, where we are constantly tested and measured by our strength”considered.

“I think that while there are still some artists, we will continue to guarantee effective responses to challenges and threats” existing, continued.

Lukashenko stressed the “correct” decision to promote the integration of the two countries into the State of the Union, in a “demonstration to the whole world that it is only possible to overcome pandemics, crises or sanctions together”.

“This complicated moment makes it necessary to show political will and commitment to guarantee results in all areas of the bilateral agenda (…). There is no way we can repeat the mistakes registered after the collapse of the Soviet Union”he stressed.

In that respect, he acknowledged that “exhausted trading options” bilaterally at lower levels. “Governments believe that agreement on individual issues is possible without you, Vladimir Vladimirovich [Putin], and without me. That is the reason for our meeting today. We will discuss these issues again in detail and make the necessary policy decisions.”noted.

Talks between the two leaders began with a meeting attended by ministers and other leaders from both countries.

The Belta agency noted that this time Putin and Lukashenko sat next to each other and not on opposite sides of the table, considering this gesture of “special symbolism” as it “emphasizes the friendly and connected nature of Belarusian-Russian relations”.

In turn, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to cooperate with Minsk in the nuclear field and highlighted growing bilateral trade that could soon reach $40 billion (37.7 billion euros), up from $38.5 billion in 2021.

“Belarus is not only a good neighbor with whom we cooperate taking into account our mutual interests, but it is also our ally in the true sense of the word”noted Putin.

Among the most important areas of bilateral relations, he mentioned security and cooperation at the international level. “In general, we are satisfied with our relationships,” he reaffirmed.
