Portuguese earn an average of 634 euros less per month than Spaniards

The Portuguese earn an average of 634 euros less per month than their Spanish neighbors. In 2021, the average salary in Portugal was about 1378 euros per month, for 14 months (19,300 euros per year) against the euro in 2012 (28,180 euros per year) used in the neighboring country, according to an unprecedented study by Eurostat that compares average wages for full-time work in the 27 countries of the European Union (EU) for the first time.

An analysis of the full-time wages of the different Member States shows that Portugal has the tenth lowest salary in the EU (€19,300 per year), after Estonia (€21,480 per year), Lithuania (€21,740 per year) and Cyprus (€22,730 per year). ).

In 2021, the average annual salary in the EU was €33510 per year or €2393 per month, for 14 months, well above the €19300 per year or €1378 per month offered in Portugal. That means a difference of 14210 euros per year or 1015 euros per month.

Among the EU Member States, the highest adjusted average annual salary was recorded in Luxembourg (€72,200), followed by Denmark (€63,300) and Ireland (€50,300). The lowest values ​​of the indicator were identified in Bulgaria (10300 euro), Hungary (12600 euro) and Romania (13000 euro).

This Eurostat indicator, which takes into account employment data from national accounts, has been adjusted to consider part-time wages as full-time equivalents, the EU statistics office clarifies.
