The European Parliament invites Elon Musk to testify in the EU

The president of the European Parliament (EP), Roberta Metsola, sent Elon Musk a letter asking him to testify before the EU legislative body, his spokesperson announced Monday.

At the moment, the response to this request from the European Parliament, which does not have the power to force one of the richest men in the world to appear before the institution, was not known.

Elon Musk, owner of electric car maker Tesla among others, caused a stir and controversy after buying Twitter in October for $44 billion.

After firing half of the company’s staff, replacing the account of former US President Donald Trump, abandoning a policy against covid-19 misinformation, banning – and then replacing – some journalists and briefly blocking references to rival platforms on Twitter, garnered the attention of politicians in the United States and Europe.

The European Commission (EC) warned Musk of the risk of “sanctions” from the European Union (EU) for the threat he poses to media freedom.

The price of Twitter shares has fallen by a third since Musk bought the platform and a survey on this social network about his continuity in the company revealed that the majority (57.5%) of users support his departure.

17.5 million users participated in this survey, who voted for 12 hours. The numbers published this morning indicate that 57.5% of users do not want Musk at the head of Twitter, compared to 42.5% in favor of him.

Musk said the poll results would be “binding,” but after 11 hours, he still hasn’t officially stepped down, named a new chief executive, or commented on the results.

Furthermore, for most of today, his generally hyperactive report remained silent, only late in the afternoon tweaking some non-poll messages and not mentioning the direction the network will take.

Almost immediately after the survey was released, Musk wrote, with supposed irony, a proverb: “Be careful what you wish for, because you just might end up getting it.” He then warned anyone interested in taking over Twitter that in order to do so, he “really needs to like pain.”

The press around the world spread the results of the survey on their front pages, not daring to speculate on the immediate future and recalling the unpredictability of the billionaire who, last week, lost his position as the richest man in the world to the French. Bernard Arnault, CEO of the LVMH luxury goods group.

According to the Forbes magazine list – which attributed Musk a fortune of 178,000 million dollars – the tycoon suffered huge losses in his great electric car business, Tesla.

Twitter will not only be unable to recoup these losses, but will “accelerate into bankruptcy.” This is not the tycoon’s first survey since he took over the social network.
