Italian journalists say they were targeted by ‘intentional’ Russian fire in Kherson

Two Italian journalists claimed on Tuesday that they had been the target of a deliberate attack by Russian forces in the Ukrainian city of Kherson (east).

The journalists said their vehicle was “intentionally” attacked by Russian forces, but they managed to flee safely.

A shell “damaged the car, we were caught under fire before we managed to escape to a safe place, I lost some blood but the wound is minor,” reporter Claudio Locatelli said in a video with his colleague Niccolò Celesti.

“If I would have opened the door, I would have lost a leg or worse,” Locatelli said.

“The car is well signposted, as it transported journalists. The attack against us, considering the place and the dynamics, was intentional”, advanced the Italian journalist.

“The shots came from the bank on the other side of the Dnieper where the Russian army is stationed,” the reporter said.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 14 million people -6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 7.8 million to European countries-, according to the most recent data. of the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).

Right now, 17.7 million Ukrainians need humanitarian aid and 9.3 million need food aid and shelter.

The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.
