Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to visit the US capital, Washington, on Wednesday, according to the US press. The Ukrainian head of state is expected to address Congress and meet with Joe Biden at the White House.
If confirmed, this will be his first international trip since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 of this year.
Three sources told the Associated Press (AP) that Zelensky is planning his visit to Washington.
The Ukrainian head of state is scheduled to visit the White House, where US President Joe Biden is also expected to announce a new package to send weapons to kyiv, including Patriot missiles, crucial for Ukraine’s defense against Russian missiles and drones.
Zelensky is also scheduled to visit the US Congress, which is about to pass a new law allowing $44.9 billion to be sent to help Ukraine.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked members of Congress in a letter Tuesday that they must be physically present for a Wednesday night session. “We are wrapping up a very special session of the 117th Congress with legislation that brings progress for the American people as well as support for our democracy,” Pelosi said in a letter to lawmakers.
Zelensky has been addressing various parliaments and international organizations remotely via video conference almost daily. His wife, Olena Zelenska, visited various foreign capitals to rally support for the Russian invasion.
The trip to the United States could come a day after Zelensky made a high-risk visit to what he considers the hottest spot on the 800-mile front line, the town of Bakhmut in Ukraine’s disputed Donetsk province.
The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia, and which continues, has already caused the displacement of more than 14 million people, inside and outside Ukraine.
The UN presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war 6,755 dead civilians and 10,607 wounded, stressing that these figures are far below the real ones.
