Elon Musk said Wednesday that he would step down as Twitter chief executive as soon as he finds “someone dumb enough” to replace him.
The billionaire launched a survey in which he asked users of the social network if they wanted him to continue at the head of the company and said that he would leave the position if that was the will of the majority. According to the poll results, ten million people (57%) are in favor of removing him.
“I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone dumb enough to take the job! After that I will only manage the software and server teams,” Elon Musk wrote on Twitter.
On Tuesday, Musk announced that in upcoming Twitter-related polls, only users with paying certified accounts will be able to vote.
The paid subscription on this social network is called Twitter Blue and it allows anyone to buy the blue symbol to verify their account. Since Musk is the majority owner of the private company, no one can force him out, but the controversial decisions he has made have already caused some of his closest supporters to distance themselves.
On Monday, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, sent Elon Musk a letter asking him to testify before the EU legislature.
At the moment, the response to this request from the European Parliament, which does not have the power to force one of the richest men in the world to appear before the institution, was not known.
Elon Musk caused a stir and controversy after buying Twitter in October for $44 billion.
After firing half of the company’s staff, replacing the account of former US President Donald Trump, abandoning a policy against covid-19 misinformation, banning – and then replacing – some journalists and briefly blocking references to rival platforms on Twitter, garnered the attention of politicians in the United States and Europe.
