The United Nations Security Council will approve this Wednesday, for the first time, a resolution on the need to defend the mental health of members of UN peacekeeping missions. The resolution proposal, of only two pages, establishes a guideline so that all the members of the missions – be they military, police or political personnel – have a follow-up before, during and after the missions.
That responsibility should rest with the countries of origin of the members of the mission, other member countries of the United Nations and the UN secretariat. The door remains open for the provision of this psychosocial support by experts from the World Health Organization or non-governmental organizations.
The initiative came from Mexico, which will already be practicing this type of monitoring.
