French President Emmanuel Macron called on Europe to reduce dependence on the US and develop its own defense capabilities, while taking a more assertive role within NATO.
Speaking to reporters upon his return to Paris after a summit in Amman, Jordan, Macron stressed that he does not advocate the development of an alternative European defense to NATO, but rather a complement. A stronger Europe, according to the French head of state, will allow the continent to become more autonomous within the alliance, acting “within NATO, with NATO, but also without depending on NATO”, quotes the Wall Street Journal .
“An alliance is not something we should depend on. It is something we must choose, something we work with. We have to rethink our strategic autonomy”, defended Emmanuel Macron.
Finally, the French president does not believe that Ukraine can join NATO, since Moscow would see it as a direct confrontation.
