The new banknotes feature an engraved portrait of Charles III, based on a photo of the royal family made available in 2013, the Bank of England told AFP. The design of the new banknotes has been “finalized in recent months” and approved by the king, the institution noted, with the banknotes set to enter mass production from the first half of 2023.
The current banknotes with the Queen’s portrait will remain in circulation and may continue to be used.
The new banknotes will only be printed to replace the old ones and to respond to a general surge in demand, the Bank of England said, adding that the process will minimize the environmental and financial impact of the changeover.
This means that banknotes with portraits of the two monarchs will be in circulation at the same time from mid-2024.
“I am very proud that the bank is releasing the design of our new banknotes, which will feature a portrait of King Charles III,” Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement.
“This is an important moment as the king is only the second monarch to appear in our notes,” he added. In 1960, Elizabeth II became the first and only monarch to have her face printed on Bank of England banknotes.
On the death of Queen Isabel II, aged 96, on September 8, Charles was proclaimed king. The heart of Charles III and the Queen’s consort Camilla is scheduled for May 6, 2023 at Westminster Abbey.
