Nine people were killed and 40 injured in an explosion at a gas tanker truck in Boksburg, some 40 kilometers east of Johannesburg, South Africa, local emergency services said on Saturday.
The truck got stuck early in the morning under a bridge, near a hospital and a home.
“We received a call around 7:50 am. The firefighters went to put out a fire. Unfortunately, the truck exploded afterwards,” William Ntladi, a spokesman for local emergency services, told AFP.
Amateur videos circulating on social media show a huge fireball exploding under the bridge, assuming the truck was too high to go under the bridge.
The vehicle was loaded with 60,000 liters of LPG gas, which is used in ovens and stoves, and had come from the southeast of the country, the emergency services spokesman said, adding that the injured driver was hospitalized.
Of the 40 injured, 19 are in serious condition, another 15 are seriously injured but in stable condition.
Six firefighters were not seriously injured, the spokesman said.
