Peruvian government announces compensation to relatives of victims killed in protests

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Peru, José Tello, announced this Saturday the creation of a multisectoral commission to analyze compensation for the families of the victims of anti-government protests in various parts of the country.

“From justice to human rights, we are going to comply with the order of our President of the Republic and our Prime Minister, to form a multisectoral commission to analyze the issue of compensation or solidarity support that we are going to give to the families of people who lost their lives,” Tello told radio station RPP.

Since December 11, the protests against President Dina Boluarte have intensified, which have also called for the release of former President Pedro Castillo, the closure of Congress and the call for a constituent assembly.

Twenty-seven people died, five of them minors, in the demonstrations and riots that took place mainly in the south of the country, in Ayacucho, Apurímac, Cuzco and Arequipa.

The Peruvian minister explained that the compensation to the relatives of the deceased will be dealt with on Tuesday the 27th and that representatives of the Ministries of Education, Agriculture, Health, Development and Social Inclusion and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers will participate in the commission.

Civil society will also be represented.

Peru is going through a political and social crisis due to the demonstrations that have shaken the country since the removal of former president Pedro Castillo, on December 7, who sought to dissolve parliament to convene a constituent assembly, create an emergency government and govern by decree ., which was interpreted as an attempted coup.

After the arrest of Castillo, who will remain in pretrial detention for 18 months, power passed to the vice president, Dina Boluarte, but the protests and demonstrations continued, claiming 26 lives, which led the new government to declare a State of National Emergency. level.

Unrest in the country forced the closure of airports, stranding thousands of tourists, including Portuguese, in Peru.
