Brazil’s future justice minister, Flávio Dino, said Sunday that the camp of pro-Bolsonaro protesters, who were calling for a military coup to prevent Lula da Silva from taking office, had become “incubators for terrorists.”
Flávio Dino, appointed by Lula da Silva as Minister of Justice in the government that will take office on January 1, expressed his concern about the camps of the most radical followers of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, after the arrest of a man who had tried to activate a explosive device, in Brasilia, and who had an arsenal seized from his home.
The man, arrested on Saturday and accused of having tried to detonate an explosive at the airport in the Brazilian capital, admitted to being part of the group of “Bolsonaristas” who camped in front of the army headquarters in Brasilia, with the aim of pressing for a coup to prevent Brazil’s president-elect, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, from returning to power.
“The serious events of Saturday in Brasilia prove that these ‘patriotic’ camps have become incubators for terrorists,” said the future Justice Minister, a senator-elect from Maranhão.
Flávio Dino said that some measures are being taken and will be expanded “as quickly as possible” to neutralize the danger generated by these groups, regretting, however, that some federal authorities, directly dependent on the far-right leader, do not do so. act on the situation.
“Investigations into unacceptable terrorism continue,” added the future minister, who announced that he asked the delegate he will designate as director general of the Federal Police, in the future government, to maintain contact with the authorities to learn about the situation.
“There is no possible political pact and there will be no amnesty for the terrorists, their supporters and financiers,” he warned.
The explosive device was placed inside a truck and the discovery of the arsenal in the defendant’s house occurred eight days before Lula da Silva took office, which raised concerns about possible violent acts during the transfer of power.
Two shotguns, two revolvers, three pistols, hundreds of ammunition, among other objects, were found at the detainee’s home.
Despite the fact that the Brasilia police did not initially mention threats or suspicions of a possible attack on January 1, when Lula will assume his third term as president of Brazil, the situation was communicated to the transition team of the progressive leader, who has already stated who fears for security during his tenure.
For the inauguration of the leader and founder of the Workers’ Party (PT), at least 17 heads of state or government confirmed their presence, such as the king of Spain and the presidents of Portugal, Germany, Argentina and Uruguay.
