At least 10 missing after avalanche on ski slope in Austria

At least 10 people are missing after an avalanche on a ski slope in the town of Lech, in the Vorarlberg region of western Austria, according to initial data from the authorities.

One person was found alive and search and rescue efforts are continuing, though hampered by the approach of night.

Several helicopters took part in the rescue efforts, which are now concentrated in a ground detachment due to nightfall, the Austrian news agency APA reported.

The avalanche began in the mid-afternoon at an altitude of 2,720 meters and struck a ski slope.

According to police reports, about 200 people are mobilized in the rescue efforts.

“We are doing everything possible to save winter athletes,” the authorities stressed.
