Covid in China: Xi Jinping calls to “protect” lives

Three years after the first coronavirus cases emerged in Wuhan, the country is facing an explosion of cases.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for measures to “effectively protect people’s lives” as his country grapples with an outbreak of Covid-19 infections, state television reported.

This is the first public comment from the Beijing strongman since the sudden abandonment at the beginning of December of the strict anti-Covid measures, in force since 2020. China has only officially announced six covid deaths since restrictions were lifted.

A very undervalued assessment according to many experts, while a large part of the elderly in China are not vaccinated against Covid.
