Former Belarusian swimmer sentenced to 12 years in prison for criticizing the regime

Former Belarusian swimmer Aliaksandra Herasimenia, creator of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Fund, was sentenced this Monday to 12 years in prison, in a trial that took place without the presence of the former athlete, Olympic medalist at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games .

Herasimenia, 36, was found guilty of acts that threaten the security of Belarus and of having called for the imposition of sanctions on the country, as was Alexandr Opeinik, another of the founders, who was sentenced to the same sentence.

Herasimenia, who won two silver medals at London 2012 and a bronze medal at Rio 2016, has been a strong critic of Belarusian President Alexandr Lukashenko’s regime’s support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
