A woman was arrested Monday after allegedly breaking into actor Robert De Niro’s New York home and trying to steal gifts placed under the Christmas tree.
Police officers patrolling Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side neighborhood saw the 30-year-old woman enter De Niro’s home around 2:45 a.m. local time (7:45 a.m. GMT), a New York City Police Department spokesman said. (NYPD).
The officers entered and “found the woman in the room” during an “attempted robbery,” he added.
ABC News quoted police sources as saying she put presents in a bag under the Christmas tree.
According to NBC News, De Niro, 79, went downstairs in a bathrobe after hearing noises. The actor was not injured in the incident.
The NYPD spokesman told AFP in a forwarded statement email, the woman is known to have had “several burglary arrests”. She was “arrested without incident and charges are pending. The investigation is ongoing,” he said.
Born and raised in Manhattan, De Niro is regarded as one of the greatest American actors of all time. He won two Oscars: one for Best Actor for playing boxer Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull (1980) and one for Best Supporting Actor in a Supporting Role in The Godfather – Part II (1974).
He is also known for his efforts to revitalize the south of the island of Manhattan after the September 11, 2001 attacks, including as co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival.
